England’s Top Hiking Locations: A Guide From Outdoorsman Chris Freville

Chris Freville enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife, Teresa, and four children. One of the things that they love to do together is going hiking in the English countryside. One of their favorite areas to hike in is around the Lakes District in Ambleside. This area features fabulous views and can be hiked with the guidance of the Mountain Journeys Hiking organization, says Chris Freville.

One of the larger walks that Chris Freville and his family have ever endeavored upon was the Bath and Mendip Explorer walk. This hike travels through some of England’s most historic towns, leading adventurers from Bath to Bradford on Avon, Mells, Chilcompton, Wells, and Glastonbury. Chris Freville’s favorite part of this walking tour was the day they crossed the Priddy Mineries Nature Reserve, as well as the day spent walking along the Kennet and Avon Canal.

A less urban, but equally extensive walk that Chris and Teresa Freville and their family have done is the Exmoor Adventurer. This walk crosses through the Valley of the Rocks and goes along the River Barle. The fourth day of this walk features views of the sea that are among Chris Freville’s favorite bits of scenery, and the last day is marked by an outstanding view of the Old Royal Forest of Exmoor. Chris Freville highly recommends this walking tour to anyone enamored with the beauty of the British countryside.

A more typical hiking tour that Teresa and Chris Freville and their family have taken part in traverses an extensive portion of Southwest England, beginning in Bath and ending up in Wells, a similar route to the Bath and Mendip Explorer walk. This tour, however, goes through Bossington, Porlock, and Selworthy, as well as across the moorland in Quantock. Chris Freville enjoys the pace of this particular tour, as well as the stops in Morwenstow where you might chance to see some rare butterflies and orchids.
